The manufacturing method for titanium alloy tubes—seamless or welded—significantly impacts their performance characteristics, available sizes, and cost, making the choice critical for engineering applications. Seamless tubes are produced by extruding or piercing a solid titanium billet at high temperatures, resulting in a tube with a homogeneous grain structure and no longitudinal weld seam. This process yields superior strength, particularly under high internal pressure and cyclic loading, and is mandatory for high-integrity applications like aerospace hydraulic lines and downhole oil and gas equipment.

Welded tubes are manufactured by rolling titanium sheet or strip into a cylindrical shape and welding the seam, typically using TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) or laser welding under an inert atmosphere. This process is more cost-effective for larger diameters and thinner walls, and it offers excellent dimensional consistency. Modern welding and subsequent cold-working and heat-treating (e.g., cold reduction and annealing) can produce welded tubes with properties approaching those of seamless tubes for many applications.

Seamless tubes are generally preferred for: high-pressure systems (>10,000 psi), applications with severe cyclic stress (fatigue-critical), and where absolute reliability with zero risk of weld defects is paramount. Welded tubes are an excellent, cost-effective choice for: low to medium-pressure systems, heat exchanger and condenser tubing, structural frames, and applications requiring large diameters or complex alloy grades that are difficult to extrude. Always specify the manufacturing method in your procurement documents to ensure the tube meets the intended service conditions.
